Tanzania is seeking to enlist former Ivory Coast international Didier Drogba as an ambassador for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, as preparations for the tournament begin to gather momentum.

The proposal has the backing of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is reportedly keen to involve high-profile figures in promoting the competition on the continental and global stage. The move reflects a broader strategy to raise the profile of the tournament and generate early interest ahead of the event.

According to available information, Drogba has already been engaged in initial discussions related to the initiative. At the invitation of Tanzania’s Minister of Sports, the former striker participated in talks focused on how best to support and promote the tournament. These discussions are understood to have centred on leveraging his international reputation and influence within football to enhance visibility for the competition.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is expected to be a major sporting event for the host nation. Securing a figure such as Drogba, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most prominent football personalities, would represent a significant step in marketing the tournament.

Drogba’s career achievements and global recognition have made him a respected figure both within and beyond the sport. His involvement in promotional activities could help attract attention from fans, sponsors and international audiences, contributing to the overall success of the event.

Tanzania’s interest in appointing an ambassador at this stage highlights the importance being placed on early planning and international outreach. Major tournaments increasingly rely on strong branding and global engagement, and the inclusion of well-known figures is often seen as a key component of that strategy.

While no official confirmation has been made regarding a formal appointment, the discussions suggest a clear intention from Tanzanian authorities to involve influential personalities in their preparations. The role of an ambassador typically includes promoting the tournament, supporting outreach initiatives, and representing the event at various engagements.

The Africa Cup of Nations remains one of the continent’s flagship sporting competitions, bringing together leading national teams from across Africa. For host nations, it presents both an opportunity to showcase organisational capacity and to boost tourism and international visibility.

As preparations continue, further announcements are expected regarding Tanzania’s plans for the tournament, including potential partnerships and promotional strategies. Whether Drogba ultimately takes on the ambassadorial role may depend on the outcome of ongoing discussions.

For now, the move signals Tanzania’s ambition to position the 2027 tournament as a high-profile event, with a strong emphasis on global appeal and effective promotion.

The post Tanzania eyes Didier Drogba as AFCON 2027 ambassador first appeared on African Football.

The final of the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League will see South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns face Morocco’s AS FAR in a two-legged contest for Africa’s most prestigious club title.

The first leg is scheduled to take place in Tshwane, South Africa, on Sunday, 17 May, with kick-off set for 14:00 GMT (16:00 local time). The return fixture will be held a week later in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday, 24 May, kicking off at 19:00 GMT (20:00 local time). The two matches will determine the continental champions in what is expected to be a closely fought encounter between two experienced sides.

Both clubs enter the final with a history of success in the competition, though neither has lifted the trophy in recent years. Mamelodi Sundowns are aiming to secure their second CAF Champions League title, having previously won the competition in 2016. Their opponents, AS FAR, are seeking to reclaim the title for the first time since their triumph in 1985, ending a wait that now stretches over four decades.

The final represents a significant moment for both teams, not only in terms of sporting achievement but also for their standing within African football. Success in the competition is widely regarded as the pinnacle of club football on the continent, offering both prestige and recognition at the highest level.

In addition to the honour of winning the title, the finalists will also be competing for a substantial financial reward. Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football, recently confirmed that the winners of this year’s competition will receive a prize of 6 million US dollars. This represents a 50 percent increase compared to previous editions, highlighting efforts to enhance the tournament’s commercial appeal and competitiveness.

The scheduling of the final follows the traditional two-leg format, with each team hosting one match. This structure is designed to provide a balanced contest, allowing both sides the opportunity to play in front of their home supporters. It also adds a tactical dimension, as teams must manage both fixtures carefully to secure an overall advantage.

Preparations for the final are expected to intensify in the coming days, with both clubs focusing on fine-tuning their squads and strategies. The opening leg in Tshwane could prove decisive in setting the tone for the tie, while the return match in Rabat is likely to determine the outcome in front of what is expected to be a passionate home crowd.

As anticipation builds, the final is shaping up to be a significant occasion in the African football calendar. With two former champions competing for continental supremacy, the 2025/26 CAF Champions League final promises to deliver a compelling conclusion to the tournament.

Several senior officials from Senegal’s football administration have reportedly had their visa applications to the United States rejected, raising concerns about preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to reports in Senegalese media, including L’Observateur, at least six applications submitted through the US embassy in Dakar earlier this week were denied. The individuals affected are understood to be members of the Senegalese Football Federation, along with associated guests connected to the organisation.

The development comes at a crucial stage, as football authorities across the world intensify planning for the expanded 2026 tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Administrative delegations typically begin travelling months in advance to attend key meetings, coordinate logistics, and engage with governing bodies such as FIFA.

Among those reportedly denied visas are Amadou Kane, the federation’s fourth vice-president, Moussa Mbaye, who serves as president of Stade de Mbour, and Modou Fall, president of AS Pikine. All three individuals were informed that they did not meet the requirements for travel approval, though no further details have been made public regarding the specific reasons for the refusals.

The lack of official clarification has added to uncertainty surrounding the situation. Neither the Senegalese Football Federation nor US diplomatic representatives in Dakar have issued statements explaining the decisions. It also remains unclear whether the affected officials will have the opportunity to appeal or reapply in time for upcoming pre-tournament engagements.

The timing of the visa denials is likely to pose logistical challenges for Senegal’s football administration. Senior officials play a central role in international coordination, including participation in organisational briefings and planning sessions that are considered vital to ensuring smooth tournament operations.

Such preparatory meetings often involve discussions on travel arrangements, accommodation, security protocols, and scheduling—key elements that underpin a country’s participation in a major global event. Disruptions at this stage could therefore complicate the federation’s ability to fully engage in the planning process.

Senegal, which has featured regularly in recent World Cup editions, is expected to be closely monitoring the situation as it develops. The country’s football authorities will be keen to resolve any administrative obstacles that could affect their preparations for the tournament.

With the 2026 World Cup set to introduce an expanded format and increased participation, coordination between national federations and host nations is expected to be more complex than in previous editions. This makes early engagement in planning processes particularly important.

For now, the visa rejections represent an unexpected setback, with further updates anticipated as discussions continue behind the scenes. Clarity from both Senegalese and US authorities is likely to be key in determining how quickly the issue can be resolved and whether affected officials will be able to take part in upcoming preparatory activities.

The post Senegal football officials denied US Visas ahead of 2026 World Cup first appeared on African Football.

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has praised his team for sustaining a closely fought title race with Mamelodi Sundowns, saying their battle has brought renewed excitement to South African football.

Pirates strengthened their position with a victory over Stellenbosch FC, moving to 62 points with three matches still to play. The result saw them surpass their previous best tally of 61 points in a Premier Soccer League campaign.

Despite the milestone, Pirates remain second in the standings, trailing Sundowns by two points. Although they hold a superior goal difference, their title ambitions depend on winning their remaining fixtures and hoping Sundowns drop points in their final matches, beginning with a clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

Ouaddou said the competitiveness between the two sides has been vital in maintaining interest in the league, drawing comparisons with the English top flight.

“In every league, in every country, if you can look at the Premier League in England, Manchester City and Arsenal are fighting, I think it’s the same fight that we are seeing in South Africa,” Ouaddou told the media.

He added that such competition benefits supporters, keeping the outcome uncertain deep into the season.

“It creates a lot of interest for South African fans, it’s not funny when you see a team in 10 games before the end of the season, you see the team is winning the league.

“So, for you as a fan, if you know at the beginning of this season who is going to be champion, you lose interest.

“So, this season, we try to bring more competitiveness. I think the boys really did well. Let’s see what the result will be at the end of this season. But the most important thing is to give this competitiveness to the PSL until the end.”

The coach emphasised that, regardless of the current standings, his players remain determined to push until the final whistle of the campaign.

“And I think it was really a good test today for us because you don’t know what will happen in the next few matches against the rival. So, for us, the dream is still here,” he continued.

“The players are going to fight, and it’s possible, like I said at the beginning of the season, it’s possible to fight until the last game, and maybe people will know the champions on the last day.”

With only three matches left, the title race remains finely balanced. Pirates must maintain a perfect run while relying on a slip from Sundowns if they are to secure the championship.

Regardless of the outcome, Ouaddou believes his side has already contributed to a more competitive and engaging league season, one that could go down to the final day before a champion is crowned.

The post Title race goes down to the wire as Pirates break points record first appeared on African Football.

Victor Osimhen has been given a reported transfer valuation of €150m by Galatasaray, as speculation intensifies over the striker’s future following an impressive season in Turkey.

The Nigerian international has emerged as one of the most sought-after forwards in European football, attracting attention from several top clubs after a run of prolific performances in both domestic and continental competitions.

According to reports in Nigerian football media, Osimhen’s form in the Turkish Super Lig has prompted Galatasaray to place a significant price tag on the forward. Spanish publication Diario AS suggests the club are determined to retain their star player unless their valuation is met.

“Galatasaray have set a €150m asking price for Victor Osimhen as speculation continues over his future, with the Nigerian striker reaffirming his strong attachment to the Turkish club,” AS reported, as per Punch NG.

Osimhen’s performances this season have been central to the growing interest. The striker has scored 13 league goals and provided five assists, underlining his attacking influence in Turkey’s top division. His impact has also extended to European competition, where he has registered seven goals and one assist in 10 UEFA Champions League matches.

Such form has reportedly placed him on the radar of several leading clubs, including Arsenal, Liverpool, Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Despite the mounting interest, Osimhen’s future remains uncertain. The forward has frequently expressed his commitment to Galatasaray throughout the current campaign, suggesting he remains content at the club for now.

That loyalty could play a role in any potential negotiations, particularly if Galatasaray seek to maintain their strong bargaining position. The reported €150m valuation reflects both Osimhen’s importance to the team and his growing reputation on the European stage.

Clubs interested in securing his services may therefore face a substantial financial challenge, should they decide to pursue a deal in the coming transfer windows.

For now, attention remains on Osimhen’s performances on the pitch, as he continues to deliver for Galatasaray while speculation about a possible high-profile move continues in the background.

The post Galatasaray place €150m valuation on Osimhen first appeared on African Football.

Prince Amoako Junior, a 19-year-old winger currently playing for FC Nordsjælland, has become one of the most sought-after young players on the continent.

His rapid rise since joining the Danish club in February 2025 has seen his market value increase significantly, drawing attention from elite teams across Europe.

Reports indicate that a number of clubs have been monitoring his development closely. Among them are Arsenal FC, Feyenoord, Brighton & Hove Albion, SC Freiburg, AFC Bournemouth, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund. However, the competition appears to be narrowing, with two clubs now leading the pursuit.

French champions Paris Saint-Germain and English side Manchester United are understood to have taken concrete steps to secure the player. Both clubs have reportedly opened discussions as they seek to gain an advantage over their rivals in what is becoming an increasingly competitive transfer battle.

🇬🇭🚨EXCLUSIVE: PSG, Manchester United lead race for FC Nordsjaelland star Prince Amoako jnr. Both clubs are understood to have expressed strong interest in the 19-year-old attacker, with a potential transfer fee believed to be in the region of €27 million to €32 million.…

— Joseph Ayinga-Walter (@AyingaWalter) May 4, 2026

The Danish club, however, is not prepared to part with one of its most promising assets without a substantial offer. FC Nordsjælland is believed to value Amoako between €27m and €32m, reflecting both his current performances and long-term potential. The player remains under contract until 2030, strengthening the club’s negotiating position.

Since his arrival, Amoako has impressed with his pace, attacking flair and ability to influence matches in the final third. His style of play, combined with his age, has made him an attractive prospect for clubs looking to invest in emerging talent with high ceilings.

While interest from across Europe remains strong, attention is increasingly focused on the developing contest between Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United. Both sides are keen to reinforce their attacking options and appear willing to meet the financial demands required to secure the winger’s services.

For now, Amoako continues to develop in Denmark, but with negotiations reportedly underway and interest intensifying, his future could soon lie at one of Europe’s top clubs.

The post Ghanaian starlet Prince Amoako on Manchester United radar first appeared on African Football.

Nigeria national football team will find out their opponents in the qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations later this month, as the draw is set to take place on 19 May.

The Super Eagles are among 48 teams due to participate in the qualification process, which will determine the nations competing at the tournament finals. Co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are also included in the draw, as preparations continue for the continental competition.

The qualification matches will be played across three international windows later this year, with fixtures scheduled for September, October and November. Teams will be divided into 12 groups, each containing four sides. The top two teams from each group will secure their place at the finals.

Nigeria enter the qualifiers following a strong showing at the previous edition of the tournament. The team finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco, and will be aiming to build on that performance by ensuring a place at the next finals.

The structure of the qualifiers means consistency across all three windows will be crucial, as teams compete for one of the limited qualification spots. With only two teams advancing from each group, early results could prove decisive in shaping the outcome.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has also confirmed the dates for the 2027 tournament. The competition will begin on 19 June, with the opening match scheduled for that day, while the final is set to take place on 17 July.

The upcoming tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, marking a significant moment for football in the East African region. Hosting duties are expected to bring increased attention and investment to the sport across the three nations.

For Nigeria, the focus remains firmly on securing qualification and mounting a strong challenge for the title. The Super Eagles are one of Africa’s most successful teams and will be looking to add to their achievements on the continental stage.

As anticipation builds ahead of the draw, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see which teams Nigeria will face in the group stage. The outcome could play a key role in shaping the team’s path to the finals.

With the qualification campaign set to unfold over several months, the Super Eagles will need to balance preparation, squad selection and performance as they aim to book their place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The post Nigeria awaits draw as road to 2027 AFCON begins first appeared on African Football.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has defended the pricing of tickets for the 2026 World Cup, arguing that market demand and United States resale laws have driven costs higher, despite mounting criticism from supporters’ groups.

Speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills on Tuesday, Infantino said football’s governing body must operate within an established entertainment market where ticket resale is permitted, allowing prices to rise significantly above their original value.

His remarks come amid growing backlash over ticket affordability, with fan organisation Football Supporters Europe (FSE) accusing FIFA of setting “extortionate” prices and describing the structure as a “monumental betrayal”. The group has already taken legal action, filing a complaint with the European Commission in March over what it calls excessive pricing.

The controversy intensified after FIFA’s official resale platform, FIFA Marketplace, listed four tickets for the tournament’s final in New York on 19 July at more than $2 million each. The listing has become a focal point for criticism, highlighting the scale of resale mark-ups.

Infantino sought to downplay the significance of such figures, stressing that resale prices do not represent the official cost of tickets. “If some people put on the resale market, some tickets for the final at $2 million, number one it doesn’t mean that the tickets cost $2 million,” Infantino said.

“And number two it doesn’t mean that somebody will buy these tickets,” he added. “And if somebody buys a ticket for the final for $2 million I will personally bring him a hot dog and a Coke to make sure that he has a great experience.”

Despite this, comparisons with previous tournaments have fuelled concern. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the most expensive final ticket had a face value of around $1,600. For 2026, the top-tier face value has risen sharply to approximately $11,000.

Infantino maintained that the increase was justified, pointing to both the scale of demand and the commercial environment in which the tournament will be held. “We have to look at the market — we are in the market in which entertainment is the most developed in the world. So we have to apply market rates,” he said.

He also argued that lower official prices would only encourage further profiteering on secondary markets. “In the US it is permitted to resell tickets as well. So if you were to sell tickets at the price which is too low, these tickets will be resold at a much higher price,” Infantino said.

“And as a matter of fact, even though some people are saying that the ticket prices we have are high, they still end up on the resale market at an even higher price, more than double of our price.”

The FIFA president highlighted unprecedented demand for the upcoming tournament, revealing that more than 500 million ticket requests had been made. This compares with fewer than 50 million combined requests for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

He also noted that a quarter of group-stage tickets were priced below $300, suggesting that more affordable options remain available for fans. “You cannot go to watch in the US a college game, not even speaking about a top professional game of a certain level, for less than $300,” Infantino said. “And this is the World Cup.”

While FIFA continues to defend its approach, criticism from supporters and legal challenges suggest the debate over accessibility and pricing is unlikely to subside as the tournament approaches.

The post FIFA defends soaring World Cup ticket prices amid backlash first appeared on African Football.

Manchester United are preparing to raise player salaries by 25% following their qualification for next season’s Champions League with Onana set to profit.

The move is expected to benefit several members of the squad, including goalkeeper Andre Onana, whose situation has drawn particular attention.

The wage increase comes as part of the club’s broader financial response to securing a return to Europe’s top club competition. Qualification is widely seen as a significant milestone, both in sporting and commercial terms, and the planned salary adjustments reflect the club’s intention to reward its players accordingly.

However, one case stands out among those set to benefit. Andre Onana, the Cameroon international goalkeeper, is currently on loan at Turkish side Trabzonspor and did not feature in Manchester United’s Premier League campaign this season. Despite his absence from domestic competition, the club has reportedly decided to include him in the salary increase.

This decision has sparked discussion among observers, with some questioning the rationale behind awarding a pay rise to a player who has not contributed on the pitch during the league campaign. Nevertheless, the club appears committed to applying the wage adjustment across the squad, regardless of individual involvement over the past season.

While the financial boost may provide clarity on short-term remuneration, it does little to resolve the uncertainty surrounding Onana’s long-term future at Old Trafford. Reports suggest that Manchester United are still evaluating their options ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with the possibility of a permanent departure for the goalkeeper under consideration.

The club is expected to be active in the transfer market as it prepares for the challenges of competing in both domestic and European competitions next season. Decisions regarding player retention and recruitment are likely to form a key part of that strategy.

Onana’s situation highlights the complexities facing the club as it balances financial rewards with squad planning. Although he is set to benefit from the same wage increase as his teammates, his role within the team remains unclear.

Manchester United have not publicly commented on the reported pay rise or Onana’s future. However, the developments suggest that while financial incentives are being addressed, significant decisions regarding the squad’s composition are still to come.

As preparations continue for the new season, attention will likely remain focused on how the club manages both its financial commitments and its transfer activity in the months ahead.

The post Onana among players in line for wage boost at United first appeared on African Football.

Manchester City have issued a strong condemnation after two of their players were subjected to racist abuse in separate incidents following a recent Premier League fixture.

The club released a statement on Tuesday denouncing the targeting of forward Antoine Semenyo during a match, while also highlighting online abuse directed at defender Marc Guéhi. Officials stressed that discrimination of any kind is unacceptable and reaffirmed their commitment to tackling racism within football.

The statement followed City’s 3-3 draw away at Everton, a result that could have implications for the Premier League title race, potentially benefiting rivals Arsenal.

Manchester City said they welcomed the rapid action taken by Everton and local authorities to identify the individual responsible for the abuse aimed at Semenyo during the match. The club described the response as encouraging but maintained that such incidents should not occur in the first place.

Attention was also drawn to racist messages posted on social media targeting Guéhi. City described these posts as “vile” and made clear their disappointment that players continue to face abuse off the pitch.

“Manchester City strongly condemns the racist abuse directed towards Antoine Semenyo,” the statement read. “We are incredibly disappointed to hear that Marc Guéhi was subject to a series of vile racist social media posts.”

The club reiterated its zero-tolerance stance, emphasising that racism has no place either in football or in wider society. It added that both players would receive the club’s full support following the incidents.

While the draw at Everton was a significant moment in the ongoing title race, the club’s focus has shifted to addressing the behaviour of individuals responsible for the abuse. Officials stressed that maintaining respect and inclusivity within the sport remains a priority.

Manchester City also underlined their ongoing commitment to working alongside football authorities and governing bodies to combat discrimination. The club said it would continue supporting efforts aimed at ensuring that the game remains welcoming to players, staff, and supporters from all backgrounds.

The statement concluded by reinforcing the club’s determination to challenge racism whenever it arises, both on and off the field, and to stand firmly with those affected.

The incidents add to a growing number of cases highlighting the persistence of racist abuse in football, despite repeated campaigns and initiatives aimed at eradicating it.

The post City speak out after Semenyo and Guéhi targeted by racist first appeared on African Football.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated abuse during a Premier League match between Everton and Manchester City, as authorities investigate an incident involving forward Antoine Semenyo.

Merseyside Police said the arrest was made during Monday’s 3-3 draw at Hill Dickinson Stadium after reports that a supporter had shouted racist remarks. The suspect, a 71-year-old man from Nottinghamshire, was detained at the ground following complaints from both fans and stewards.

In a statement, police confirmed the individual was arrested “on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence” after “supporters and stewards reported that racist abuse was shouted by a fan”.

Authorities added that their investigation is continuing, with officers working alongside Everton Football Club. The man has since been released on bail with strict conditions, including a temporary ban preventing him from approaching within one mile of any designated sports stadium during matchday periods.

The incident has prompted strong condemnation from Everton, who reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on discrimination. In a statement, the club said “behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated”.

“Racism and discrimination in all forms are completely unacceptable. They have no place in our stadia, our sport or in society,” the club said.

“The club will continue to work closely with the authorities to support their investigation and will take the strongest possible action in line with its zero-tolerance approach.”

The alleged abuse marks the second time this season that Semenyo, 26, has been subjected to racist behaviour. Earlier in the campaign, while playing for AFC Bournemouth, he reported being targeted during a match against Liverpool FC, which ended in a 4-2 defeat.

Following that earlier incident, Semenyo called for tougher measures to combat racism in football, suggesting that custodial sentences could be considered for those found guilty of such offences.

Manchester City also responded to Monday’s events, expressing support for Semenyo and highlighting a separate case involving one of their own players. The club said defender Marc Guehi had been subjected to racist abuse on social media after the match.

In a statement, City praised the rapid response of both Everton and the police, while condemning the abuse directed at players.

“We are incredibly disappointed to hear that Marc Guehi was subject to a series of vile racist social media posts last night,” the club said.

“We will continue to offer our full support to both Antoine and Marc and never accept discrimination of any kind in our game.”

The latest incident adds to ongoing concerns about racism in football, with clubs, governing bodies and campaigners continuing to call for stronger enforcement and cultural change across the sport.

The post Everton fan arrested after racially abusing Semenyo first appeared on African Football.

Arsenal have secured a place in the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in 20 years after a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Emirates Stadium, sealing a 2-1 aggregate triumph in their semi-final tie.

A decisive goal from Bukayo Saka just before half-time proved enough to send the north London side through, as they now prepare for a showdown against either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on 30 May.

The result marks a significant milestone for Arsenal, who last reached the final in 2006, when they were defeated by Barcelona. This time, they will be hoping to go one step further and claim Europe’s most prestigious club trophy for the first time in their history.

The match itself was a tightly contested affair, with few clear-cut chances. The breakthrough came in the 44th minute when Saka reacted quickest after Leandro Trossard saw his initial effort saved. The England international calmly slotted the rebound home, giving Arsenal a crucial advantage heading into the interval.

For Atletico Madrid, the night proved frustrating, particularly for Ademola Lookman. The Nigerian forward, who was named in the starting line-up by manager Diego Simeone, struggled to influence proceedings and was effectively contained by Arsenal’s defence.

Lookman, making his eighth appearance in the competition this season for the Spanish side, found opportunities limited throughout his time on the pitch. He was eventually substituted in the 57th minute, with Nahuel Molina introduced in his place as Atletico sought a way back into the match.

Despite late efforts to find an equaliser, Atletico were unable to break down Arsenal’s resolute defence. The home side managed the closing stages effectively, preserving their lead and ensuring progression to the final.

The victory continues an impressive European campaign for Arsenal, who have demonstrated consistency and resilience throughout the tournament. Their defensive discipline, combined with timely attacking contributions, has been key to their success.

Attention now turns to the final in Budapest, where Arsenal will face formidable opposition regardless of whether Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain advance. Both potential opponents boast significant European pedigree, setting the stage for a highly anticipated encounter.

For Atletico Madrid, the defeat represents a missed opportunity to reach another Champions League final under Simeone. Despite their efforts across both legs, they were ultimately unable to overcome Arsenal’s narrow advantage.

As Arsenal prepare for their first Champions League final appearance in two decades, the focus will be firmly on making history and securing the club’s maiden title on the European stage.

The post Lookman quiet as Arsenal seal Champions League final spot first appeared on African Football.

Former Egypt international Bassem Morsi has expressed confidence that Zamalek SC can secure the Premier League title this season, pointing to the team’s recent form and growing belief as key factors in their campaign.

In remarks made during an interview, Morsi suggested that Zamalek have exceeded expectations after a period in which their title credentials were questioned. He noted that the team had been written off by some observers earlier in the season, but insisted their performances have since shifted that narrative. According to the former striker, results on the pitch have played a decisive role in restoring confidence around the club and reinforcing their position as genuine contenders.

Zamalek’s campaign, he argued, has been characterised by steady improvement rather than early dominance. This gradual rise, he believes, has allowed the team to build momentum at a critical stage of the season, placing them in a strong position as the title race intensifies. Morsi emphasised that such momentum can be crucial in determining the outcome of closely contested leagues, particularly when several teams remain in contention.

He also pointed to the psychological aspect of the title race, suggesting that Zamalek are operating without the same level of pressure faced by some of their rivals. In his assessment, the team’s current situation allows them to approach matches with greater freedom and composure. He maintained that their fate remains in their own hands, a factor that could prove decisive in the closing stages of the campaign.

While highlighting Zamalek’s strengths, Morsi acknowledged that competition remains fierce. He identified Al Ahly SC and Pyramids FC as key challengers, both of whom continue to push for the title. However, he suggested that Zamalek currently hold a slight edge, based on their recent performances and the momentum they have built.

The former forward also drew attention to the role of supporters in the club’s campaign. He described the backing from Zamalek fans as a significant source of motivation for the players, particularly during demanding periods of the season. Their consistent support, he indicated, has contributed to the team’s resilience and determination on the pitch.

As the season moves towards its conclusion, the title race in Egypt remains finely balanced. Zamalek’s ability to maintain their form and capitalise on their current position could determine whether they are able to convert promise into silverware. With rivals close behind and little margin for error, the coming fixtures are expected to play a decisive role in shaping the final outcome.

Morsi’s assessment reflects a growing sense of belief surrounding Zamalek’s campaign, as the club continues its pursuit of domestic success in a competitive and closely fought league.

Egyptian club Al Ahly SC are exploring a move for Moroccan forward Soufiane Benjedida as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the next transfer window.

Reports from Egyptian media suggest the Cairo-based side have already made initial contact to gather information about the player’s contractual situation with Maghreb Fez. The approach forms part of a wider recruitment strategy aimed at reinforcing key areas of the squad in preparation for the upcoming season.

Benjedida, 27, has emerged as a leading candidate on Al Ahly’s shortlist. According to the programme “Al-Kora Ma’a Fayeq” broadcast on MBC Egypt, he is among three forwards currently under close evaluation by the club’s technical team. Another name under consideration is Moroccan striker Ryan Mmaee, who is currently playing in Cyprus.

Al Ahly are understood to be keen on adding further Moroccan talent to their squad, which already includes players such as Youssef Belamri and Achraf Bencharki. The club’s interest in Benjedida reflects both his recent performances and their broader recruitment focus.

However, any potential deal could prove complicated. Maghreb Fez have taken steps to strengthen their position by extending the striker’s contract until 2030. The move is widely interpreted as an attempt to increase his market value and provide the club with greater leverage in negotiations.

The Moroccan side are reportedly reluctant to part ways with one of their key players unless a significant offer is made. While Benjedida’s market value is believed to be around €1.3 million, reports indicate that Al Ahly could be prepared to offer approximately $2 million if they decide to formalise their interest.

Much of the growing attention surrounding the player has been driven by his performances this season. Benjedida has been in prolific form, scoring 13 goals in just 15 appearances in the Moroccan league. His efficiency in front of goal and consistent output have made him one of the most prominent attacking players in the competition.

His displays have not only boosted his reputation domestically but have also attracted interest from clubs beyond Morocco, as teams begin to assess their options ahead of the summer transfer window.

For Al Ahly, the potential signing represents an opportunity to add a proven goal scorer to their ranks. For Maghreb Fez, it presents a test of their resolve to retain one of their most valuable assets in the face of increasing external interest.

With the transfer window approaching, further developments are expected as both clubs weigh their options and determine their next steps.

The post Al Ahly target in-form Moroccan striker Benjedida first appeared on African Football.

Saudi side Al-Shabab FC have taken disciplinary action against Moroccan striker Abderrazak Hamdallah following a heated incident involving teammate Yannick Carrasco during their recent league defeat.

The controversy unfolded in Al-Shabab’s heavy 5-1 loss to Al-Taawoun FC, a match in which Hamdallah scored his side’s only goal. Despite his contribution, tensions escalated late in stoppage time over the taking of a direct free kick near the edge of the penalty area.

According to Saudi journalist Khaled Al-Shunaif, who discussed the incident on his programme “Our League is Different” on MBC, Carrasco had initially been designated to take the set piece. However, Hamdallah stepped in, took control of the ball, and unexpectedly handed responsibility to teammate Josh Branhull, sparking visible frustration on the pitch.

Reports suggest Carrasco attempted to reclaim the ball, only for Hamdallah to insist on his decision, creating a tense exchange between the two players. The disagreement is said to have continued beyond the final whistle, spilling into the dressing room and further straining relations within the squad.

The situation appears to have had immediate consequences, with Hamdallah missing the team’s next training session and doubts emerging over his availability for the upcoming clash against Al-Nassr FC. The incident is also believed to be part of a pattern, with previous tensions reported between the Moroccan forward and his Belgian teammate earlier in the season.

Club Imposes Firm Disciplinary Measures

In response, Al-Shabab’s management has reportedly taken a strong stance to restore order within the squad. According to Saudi outlet “Al-Riyadh,” the club has decided to exclude Hamdallah from the match against Al-Nassr and suspend him from group training for seven days.

The move underlines the club’s determination to enforce discipline, particularly at a time when internal harmony is crucial. There are also growing suggestions that the situation could impact Hamdallah’s future at the club before the end of the season, despite ongoing efforts behind the scenes to ease tensions.

Cryptic Message Adds to the Drama

Hamdallah has since responded in a manner that has drawn further attention. The striker posted a Quranic verse on his account on X, writing: “They plot, and Allah plots, and Allah is the best of plotters.”

The message has been widely interpreted as a subtle expression of dissatisfaction with the club’s decision, adding another layer of intrigue to an already tense situation.

High-Stakes Clash Awaits

The timing of the controversy could not be more significant, with Al-Shabab set to face league leaders Al-Nassr in a crucial fixture at SHG Arena. While Al-Nassr aim to consolidate their position at the top of the standings, Al-Shabab are battling to recover from a difficult campaign that currently sees them languishing near the lower end of the table.

With tensions still simmering and key decisions already taken, all eyes will be on how the situation unfolds both on and off the pitch in the days ahead.

The post Hamdallah Sanctioned After On-Field Dispute at Al-Shabab first appeared on African Football.

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has praised the unity within his squad after several injured players, including Achraf Hakimi, chose to travel with the team for their decisive UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich.

The Moroccan international, along with teammates Chevalier and Ndjanto, will be part of the travelling delegation despite being unavailable for selection due to injury. Their inclusion highlights what Enrique described as the collective spirit within the squad ahead of a crucial European fixture.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Enrique emphasised the importance of togetherness within the group as PSG prepare for a high-stakes encounter in Munich.

“They asked to come. For us, this shows the quality of players we have.”

He further explained that the injured players will be present at the stadium to support their teammates and share in the occasion, underlining their commitment to the team’s campaign.

“They will be there at the stadium, to support the team and try to experience this match with us.”

Crucial second leg in Munich

The second leg will take place on Wednesday at the Allianz Arena, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 GMT+1. PSG enter the match with a narrow advantage following a dramatic 5-4 victory in the first leg, setting up a finely balanced contest for a place in the final.

The high-scoring nature of the opening encounter has increased anticipation around the return fixture, with both teams expected to approach the match aggressively given the stakes involved.

Squad unity under scrutiny

Enrique’s comments come at a time when squad cohesion is seen as an important factor in PSG’s European ambitions. The decision by injured players to remain involved with the group is being viewed as a reflection of strong internal morale.

Hakimi’s presence, in particular, has been noted as significant, given his influence within the team prior to his injury. His willingness to travel despite being sidelined has been interpreted as a gesture of support for the squad during a critical phase of the season.

Preparation for decisive encounter

PSG’s preparation has focused not only on tactical readiness but also on maintaining focus and unity ahead of one of the most important matches of their campaign. The club remains within touching distance of another Champions League final, but faces a formidable challenge against Bayern Munich on home soil.

Team spirit central to PSG ambitions

As PSG approach a defining moment in their season, Enrique’s remarks highlight the value placed on collective spirit within the squad.

With injured players joining the travelling party and morale appearing strong, the French champions will hope that unity off the pitch translates into performance on it as they attempt to secure a place in the Champions League final.

The post Hakimi’s presence boosts PSG spirit ahead of Bayern clash first appeared on African Football.

Former Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan has weighed in on growing speculation surrounding the next head coach of Al Ahly SC, offering strong support for Hossam El Badry as the most suitable candidate for the role.

The discussion comes amid widespread reports suggesting that current head coach Jess Torp could be replaced at the end of the season following a dip in the team’s performances. Attention has increasingly turned to potential successors as the club prepares for a possible change in leadership.

Recent media reports have also linked former Al Ahly coach Hossam El Badry with a return to the position, intensifying debate over who should take charge of the team moving forward.

Hassan supports El Badry

Speaking during a televised appearance on ON Sport, Hassan made his preference clear when asked about the most suitable Egyptian coach for the job.

“Captain Hossam is watching us now, and if we were to talk, the most suitable Egyptian coach to lead Al-Ahly at the moment is Hossam El-Badry.”

Hassan’s comments reflect his belief that experience and familiarity with high-pressure environments are key factors in managing a club of Al Ahly’s stature, particularly during periods of transition.

Emam puts forward alternative option

However, former international teammate Hazem Emam offered a different perspective, suggesting that another domestic coach could also be considered for the role.

“And Ali Maher deserves it.”

His brief but direct endorsement of Ali Maher highlights the presence of multiple candidates in the conversation, with differing opinions emerging among former players and pundits.

Debate over pressure and experience

Hassan responded to Emam’s suggestion by acknowledging Ali Maher’s qualities but stressing the importance of handling pressure at a club like Al Ahly.

“There is no disagreement about Ali Maher, but I am talking about pressure. Hossam El Badry can handle it better than Ali Maher.”

He further explained that El Badry’s previous experience managing top-level players and dealing with high expectations gives him an advantage in his view.

“Al-Badri is able to deal with the stars and with the players of the current generation in particular, and that is why I see that Hossam Al-Badri is the most suitable at the moment, because he has gone through the same similar circumstances in the past.”

Background to the coaching uncertainty

The debate comes at a time when Al Ahly are assessing their technical direction following a season of inconsistent performances. While no official decision has been confirmed, speculation continues to grow around potential changes in the dugout.

The club, one of the most successful in African football, is often associated with high expectations and immediate pressure for results, making the choice of head coach a critical decision.

Decision awaits as opinions divide

As discussions continue, the contrasting views of Hassan and Emam reflect the wider debate over experience versus fresh opportunity in Egyptian football management.

With Al Ahly yet to confirm any decision, attention now turns to how the club will balance pressure, pedigree and long-term planning in selecting its next head coach.

The post Hassan backs El Badry for Al Ahly job as debate heats up first appeared on African Football.

Former France international Thierry Henry has identified an African side as one to watch at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, while also expressing hope that Kylian Mbappe returns to peak condition in time for the competition.

Speaking in an interview with the Spanish newspaper Marca, Henry reflected on the prospects for the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by three countries, describing it as a unique and highly anticipated event in the football calendar.

“My prediction for the World Cup? I’m really looking forward to it, even though I’ll be working for CBS in Britain. But the World Cup is always an exciting event; it takes place every four years, and that’s what makes it so unique and special. The Champions League is also exciting, but we watch it every year. I’m not saying winning the Champions League is easy, but you have a chance every year.”

A tournament of unpredictability

Henry emphasised that the expanded format and multi-country hosting would add to the tournament’s appeal, while also highlighting the unpredictable nature of World Cup football.

“Holding the tournament in three countries makes it more special. I hope it will be a great tournament. In the last edition in Qatar, we witnessed an amazing final with a result that we French people did not want, although the match was great and everyone except the French were happy with Messi’s victory.”

The former striker pointed to several traditional powers as leading contenders, including Argentina national football team, France national football team and Spain national football team.

“First and foremost, we must have all due respect for Argentina, the defending champions. They are still a strong team and they have Messi. Then there are us, France, who have a great team and we reached the last two finals. Then there is Spain. It amazes me that no matter what players they have, the team always plays in the same way, with the same attractive style, and it is very difficult to take the ball away from them.”

Respect for emerging challengers

Beyond the established favourites, Henry also identified a number of teams capable of making a significant impact, including Portugal national football team, England national football team, Brazil national football team, Norway national football team, Senegal national football team and Germany national football team.

His inclusion of Senegal among the teams to watch highlights growing recognition of African nations’ competitiveness on the global stage.

“The strange thing about the World Cup is that you play in it but you don’t prepare for it. Coaches don’t have enough time to train. Players arrive at the tournament burdened with minutes of play and various matches, under enormous pressure from all sides, and that’s why disappointments are sometimes so frequent.”

Henry also praised Portugal’s midfield depth, referencing players such as Joao Neves, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha and Bruno Fernandes, while noting the continued presence of Cristiano Ronaldo as a key figure.

Message for Mbappé

Turning to Mbappé, Henry acknowledged the forward’s recent struggles at Real Madrid but expressed confidence in his ability to respond on the international stage.

“This is something everyone will have to deal with. I just hope that Kylian returns in full fitness and readiness and delivers a distinguished performance for our country in the tournament, that’s all.”

High expectations for a global spectacle

As anticipation builds for the 2026 World Cup, Henry’s remarks underline both the strength of established teams and the potential for emerging nations to challenge the status quo.

With a wide range of contenders and the inherent unpredictability of the tournament, the competition is expected to deliver another compelling chapter in international football.

The post Henry tips Senegal and urges Mbappé to return to form first appeared on African Football.

A source within the Turkish club has indicated that two of the three presidential contenders, Hakan Safi and Mehmet Ali Aydinlar, have already initiated contact with the player’s representative. The discussions are understood to be exploratory, aimed at assessing the feasibility of bringing the Egyptian forward to Istanbul during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Election ambitions shape transfer plans

The reported approach forms part of broader election strategies, with candidates aiming to present ambitious sporting visions to secure public backing. Central to these plans is the recruitment of high-profile players capable of transforming the team’s competitive standing.

For Fenerbahçe supporters, such moves are likely to be viewed as a signal of intent, particularly given Salah’s status as one of the most recognisable attacking players in world football.

However, the source suggested that these efforts remain at an early stage, with no formal negotiations yet underway.

Salah’s stance remains unchanged

Despite the interest, Salah’s position is described as clear. The forward is said to favour continuing his career in one of Europe’s top five leagues or pursuing a move to the Saudi Pro League once he departs Liverpool FC at the end of the current season.

The possibility of a move to Turkey has not been seriously considered by the player at this stage, according to the same source. Nevertheless, it has not been entirely ruled out, particularly if a compelling sporting and financial proposal were to emerge.

This leaves the situation open, with Salah’s future still undecided as the summer transfer window approaches.

A political dimension to the transfer

The timing of the reported contacts highlights the intersection between club politics and transfer activity. With elections scheduled for June, the potential signing of a player of Salah’s calibre could become a powerful campaign tool.

Each candidate is expected to outline plans aimed at restoring or enhancing the club’s competitive edge, and high-profile recruitment is often central to such proposals.

As a result, Salah’s name may continue to feature prominently in campaign narratives, regardless of the practical likelihood of a transfer being completed.

Uncertainty ahead of key decisions

The outcome of the presidential elections is likely to play a decisive role in shaping Fenerbahçe’s transfer strategy. A change in leadership could influence both the club’s financial priorities and its approach to negotiations with top players.

At the same time, Salah’s own decision-making process will remain a key factor. His preference for elite European competition or alternative opportunities elsewhere suggests that any potential move would require significant alignment on sporting ambition.

All options remain open

With the election approaching and the transfer window drawing closer, both Fenerbahçe and Salah face important decisions.

While the reported contact underscores the club’s ambitions, the player’s current stance means that any move to Turkey remains uncertain, pending developments on both the political and sporting fronts.

The 24-year-old winger, currently playing for Feyenoord Rotterdam, has attracted widespread attention following a standout season in the Dutch league. His performances have positioned him among the most promising attacking players in Europe, prompting increased interest from clubs seeking reinforcements in wide areas.

Impressive season draws attention

Hadj Moussa, sometimes described as a potential successor to Riyad Mahrez, has delivered notable statistics during the 2025–2026 campaign. He has scored 11 goals and provided seven assists, underlining his effectiveness in the final third.

In addition to his goal contributions, the Algerian international has been recognised as one of the most successful dribblers among African players in European competitions. His ability to beat defenders and create opportunities in tight spaces has become a defining feature of his game.

The winger has also made an impression at international level with Algeria national team, where he is considered one of the emerging attacking options. Observers expect him to feature prominently in future tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Growing interest from France

According to reports from Foot Mercato, Marseille have been monitoring Hadj Moussa for an extended period and have sought to initiate indirect discussions with Feyenoord. The club is understood to be keen to strengthen its attacking line with a player capable of making a decisive impact.

Lille, meanwhile, have adopted a more measured approach. Their interest is described as serious but less public, with the club relying on financial discipline and squad stability to position themselves as strong contenders for the signing.

Despite the differing strategies, both clubs are said to be committed to securing the player’s services, setting up a direct contest between two Ligue 1 sides.

Financial barrier complicates negotiations

Any potential transfer, however, may prove difficult to complete. Feyenoord have reportedly placed a valuation of around €30 million on the player, reflecting both his current performances and projected development.

This asking price is seen as a significant obstacle for both Marseille and Lille, with reports suggesting that neither club is currently in a position to meet or approach the figure. As a result, negotiations could be prolonged or require alternative structures to reach an agreement.

Deal remains uncertain amid rising demand

Hadj Moussa’s rapid rise has made him one of the most sought-after young talents in European football.

While interest from Marseille and Lille highlights his growing reputation, the financial demands set by Feyenoord mean that any move remains uncertain. The coming transfer window is likely to determine whether either club can overcome these challenges and secure one of the continent’s emerging attacking prospects.

The French international left the Jeddah-based club during the winter transfer window to join Fenerbahce, in a transfer that drew attention given his status as one of the team’s most prominent foreign players.

Disagreements behind the scenes

Former Al-Ittihad player Manaf Abu Shaqir provided insight into the situation during an appearance on the “Our League is Different” programme. He indicated that tensions had developed between Kanté and Conceição prior to the transfer.

“Conceição had disagreements with some players, most notably Abdul Rahman Al-Aboud, in addition to N’Golo Kante, who expressed his dissatisfaction with the Portuguese coach’s behavior and felt uncomfortable at times.”

He added: “There is a technical disagreement between Conceição and Kante, but it has not reached the point of a major clash.”

These remarks prompted a response from media figure Khaled Al-Shunaif, who said: “This means that the coach has problems with the entire team.”

A significant departure

Kanté joined Al-Ittihad from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 and went on to make 105 appearances for the club. During that period, he scored 10 goals and provided 11 assists, playing a key role in the team’s success in securing both the Saudi League and the King Salman Cup during the 2024–25 season.

His departure, therefore, marked a notable shift in the squad’s composition, particularly given his influence in midfield and contribution to recent achievements.

Concerns over team performance

Abu Shaqir also raised broader concerns about Al-Ittihad’s current form under Conceição, particularly following a goalless draw against Al-Kholoud in the Saudi Pro League.

“The team, under Conceição, is going through a bad technical situation. There are clear errors in the formation. The coach is playing with a defensive identity despite needing to win this match, and the overall performance is beyond comment. The team lacks identity and character, as we can see.”

He further commented on individual performances within the squad: “Moussa Diaby worked relatively hard in the Al-Kholoud match, but I don’t see any significant impact from Al-Ittihad’s foreign players, and Simic’s poor performance doesn’t match his market value at all, while goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic’s level has declined this season.”

The draw left Al-Ittihad in sixth place with 49 points after 31 rounds, as they continue to pursue Al-Taawoun for a higher finish and potential qualification for the AFC Champions League play-off stage.

Key fixtures ahead

The club faces a series of important matches in the closing stages of the season. Al-Ittihad are scheduled to host Damac before travelling to face Al-Ettifaq and Al-Shabab. Their campaign will conclude with a home fixture against Al-Qadisiyah.

Questions remain over direction

Kanté’s exit and the reported tensions with Conceição have added to growing scrutiny surrounding Al-Ittihad’s direction.

With inconsistent results and concerns over team identity, the remainder of the season may prove decisive in shaping both the club’s immediate future and the position of its head coach.

According to a source speaking to the WinWin platform, the Danish manager has expressed anger in recent hours regarding several matters affecting his authority and working environment at the club, commonly referred to as the “Red Castle”.

Rumours over coaching authority

One of the primary sources of discontent relates to speculation that one of Torp’s assistants has been responsible for selecting starting line-ups and managing certain matches. The claims have reportedly unsettled the coach, who is said to value collaboration but insists that final decisions rest with him.

The source indicated that Torp has overseen all of Al Ahly’s matches, including the high-profile fixture against Zamalek SC. While assistant coach Adel Mostafa has taken on a more prominent role in interacting with players, this is believed to have been within the framework of the club’s internal structure, possibly at the direction of the administration.

Questions over dressing room control

A second issue contributing to Torp’s frustration is ongoing discussion about his influence within the dressing room. Reports suggesting a lack of control and the existence of internal player disputes have circulated in recent weeks.

Although Torp has not publicly addressed these claims, the source emphasised that his responsibilities centre on enforcing technical discipline both on and off the pitch. Matters relating to broader squad management may fall under the remit of football director Walid Salah El-Din.

Contract uncertainty and external negotiations

Contract-related speculation has also emerged as a significant concern. The source noted that frequent discussion surrounding a potential penalty clause and reported talks with alternative coaching candidates have added to the pressure on Torp.

“He continued: “Toroop believes that there was a conversation with his agent or the company responsible for him about the mechanism of the agreement to terminate the contract at the end of the league matches, and it was agreed that a legal representative would arrive in Cairo to negotiate these matters.””

This situation has reportedly caused unease, particularly as the coach continues to lead the team through a demanding period of the season.

Squad concerns and recruitment issues

The fourth factor relates to Torp’s dissatisfaction with squad planning. The coach is said to feel that he has been unfairly evaluated, particularly as transfer targets he identified—specifically in the striker and left-back positions—were not secured.

According to the source, this has contributed to ongoing issues in front of goal, with missed opportunities not solely attributable to tactical decisions.

Focus shifts to upcoming fixture

Despite the off-field concerns, attention now turns to Al Ahly’s upcoming match against ENPPI Club in the Egyptian League’s championship phase.

Uncertainty surrounds Torp’s future

As tensions continue to simmer, Torp’s situation reflects broader challenges within the club during a critical stage of the campaign.

With questions over authority, performance, and long-term planning, the coming weeks may prove decisive in determining both the coach’s future and Al Ahly’s direction.

Kylian Mbappe is facing growing uncertainty at Real Madrid, with reports suggesting a decline in form and influence alongside concerns about his integration within the squad.

The French forward, once seen as a central figure in the team’s attacking structure, has experienced a difficult period marked by injuries and reduced impact on the pitch. His absence from the starting line-up has become more frequent, while his recent performances have fallen short of expectations.

Mbappe has scored just once in his last 11 matches in La Liga, a run that has significantly affected his standing among the league’s top scorers. His lead in the scoring charts has narrowed to three goals over Vedat Muriqi of Real Mallorca, increasing the pressure as the season nears its conclusion.

Shift in team hierarchy

At the same time, the resurgence of Vinicius Junior has altered the internal dynamics at Real Madrid. The Brazilian’s improved performances have coincided with Mbappe’s struggles, leading to what some observers describe as a shift in the team’s leading figure.

According to reports from the Spanish newspaper Marca, Mbappe is now experiencing a sense of “isolation” within the club. This reportedly extends to both his relationships with teammates and his connection with the coaching staff, suggesting a broader issue beyond form alone.

Injury setbacks and disrupted momentum

Mbappe’s difficulties have been compounded by recurring injuries, which have disrupted his rhythm throughout the campaign. He missed 10 matches over a period of 53 days, limiting his ability to maintain consistency after what had initially been a strong start to the season.

Early in the campaign, the forward had been widely praised and even described at times as “the best player in the world.” However, his momentum has since stalled, and the contrast between his early promise and recent performances has become increasingly apparent.

Impact on Real Madrid’s season

The team’s overall results have mirrored Mbappe’s decline. Real Madrid have endured a challenging campaign, with elimination from the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals at the hands of Bayern Munich, losing 1-2 in the first leg and 3-4 in the second.

Domestically, they suffered a 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final and were also beaten by the same scoreline by second-division side Albacete, resulting in an early exit from the Copa del Rey in the round of 16.

In the league, Mbappe’s goals initially kept Real Madrid competitive in the title race. However, a downturn in results has left the team 11 points behind leaders Barcelona with only four matches remaining, effectively placing the title beyond reach.

Uncertain future at the Bernabeu

As the season approaches its conclusion, questions are increasingly being raised about Mbappe’s future at the club. Observers suggest that if his current situation persists, a departure could become a possibility.

A defining period for Mbappe and Madrid

Mbappe’s situation highlights the challenges of maintaining consistency at the highest level, particularly within a team undergoing difficulties.

Whether he can rediscover his form and re-establish his influence may prove decisive—not only for his own future but also for Real Madrid’s prospects moving forward.

The post Isolation and injuries cast doubt on Mbappe’s madrid future first appeared on African Football.

The Egyptian forward, widely regarded as a central figure during his nine-year spell at Anfield, has indicated that maintaining standards could prove challenging without strong role models within the squad. His remarks come at a time when Liverpool are enduring a difficult campaign, marked by inconsistent performances and mounting scrutiny.

In an interview with Sky Sports ahead of a match against Manchester United, Salah reflected on his influence at the club and the standards he sought to establish.

“I remember when I first came here, no one trained before the official time, but I started working before and after training, and then the others started imitating me. I am proud that the new players saw (Mo) enter the building first and go to the gym, and things changed automatically. I love this place and I want these boys to succeed and continue on this path.”

He added: “I told the officials that the club needs a role model after I leave; people who come in early and commit, and if that doesn’t happen it will be difficult for the club because maintaining high standards is absolutely essential.”

Concerns over dressing room culture

Salah also spoke about the importance of a strong collective mentality in a separate interview with former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard on TNT Sports.

“In the last ten years, everyone had the same goal, and if you didn’t perform your role correctly, the rest would hold you very accountable. I sincerely hope that this doesn’t change with the departure of many players and the changing bonds within the team.”

His comments have resonated following a 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford, where Liverpool were criticised for a lack of cohesion and intensity, particularly in the opening stages. The performance has been seen by some observers as symptomatic of wider issues affecting the team this season.

Signs of transition at Anfield

The potential departure of Salah is not the only change facing Liverpool. Vice-captain Andy Robertson is also expected to leave, while uncertainty surrounds goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who has reportedly attracted interest from Juventus. Meanwhile, captain Virgil van Dijk has just one year remaining on his contract.

These developments have contributed to a growing sense that the club may be approaching the end of a significant era. Questions are increasingly being asked about who will emerge as the next leaders within the squad and whether the current group can maintain the standards set in previous years.

Some criticism has also been directed at players’ professionalism, with suggestions that time away from training has affected performance levels. However, Van Dijk dismissed such concerns, defending his teammates’ approach.

“We are not children, everyone here is an adult. It’s not about holidays, it’s about finding the right balance. Pep Guardiola has given City players days off and they are performing well.”

Mounting pressure amid difficult season

Liverpool’s struggles have been compounded by a series of setbacks, including 18 defeats across the season. Increased scrutiny from supporters has followed, with even minor details—such as pre-match routines—coming under criticism.

Managerial strategies, including recovery-focused training methods, have also been questioned, particularly in light of an ongoing injury crisis. While such approaches had previously gone largely unnoticed during more successful periods, results have now brought them into sharper focus.

Midfielder Dominic Szoboszlai has attempted to step into a leadership role, though he is still seen as developing in that capacity.

Leadership question defines Liverpool’s next chapter

As Salah prepares to depart, Liverpool face a defining moment in their recent history.

His warning underscores a broader concern: sustaining a winning culture requires more than talent alone. Whether the club can identify new leaders capable of upholding those standards may determine how successfully they navigate the transition ahead.

The Moroccan international sustained the injury in the closing stages of the first leg last Tuesday, an encounter that ended in a high-scoring 5-4 victory for PSG. His absence represents a significant setback for the French side as they prepare for the return fixture at the Allianz Arena.

Injury blow ahead of defining fixture

Hakimi’s withdrawal from the squad comes at a critical moment in the tie, with PSG holding a narrow advantage following an intense first-leg contest. The defender had featured in that match before being forced off late on, and his condition has now ruled him out of the decisive clash in Munich.

The second leg is expected to determine which side progresses to the final, with Bayern Munich aiming to overturn the deficit on home soil. PSG, meanwhile, must reorganise their defensive structure without one of their key players.

Squad confirmed for Munich trip

Despite Hakimi’s absence, PSG have named a full travelling squad for the encounter, covering all areas of the pitch.

In goal, the options include Matvey Safonov, Renato Marin, Artur Vignaud and Bilal Lawrindon.

The defensive unit features Lucas Beraldo, Marquinhos, Elia Zabarne, Willian Pacho, Lucas Hernandez and Nuno Mendes, with adjustments likely required to compensate for Hakimi’s absence.

Midfield selections include Vitina, Lee Kang-in, Seny Mayolo, Joao Neves, Drew Fernandes, Warren Zaire Emery and Fabian Ruiz, offering a mix of youth and experience as the team looks to control the tempo of the match.

In attack, PSG have named Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Gonçalo Ramos, Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barkola and Ibrahim Mbaye, providing multiple options in forward areas as they seek to protect their aggregate lead.

High-stakes encounter in Munich

The first leg’s 5-4 result underlined the attacking quality of both teams, setting up what is expected to be another closely contested meeting. Bayern Munich will look to capitalise on home advantage, while PSG aim to maintain their edge and secure progression.

Hakimi’s absence adds an extra layer of complexity for the French champions, particularly given the defensive demands of facing a high-scoring Bayern side.

PSG test depth in defining moment

As the semi-final reaches its conclusion, PSG’s ability to adapt without Hakimi could prove decisive.

The team’s depth will be tested against a Bayern Munich side determined to overturn the deficit, with a place in the Champions League final at stake.

The Spanish giants are already grappling with a disappointing campaign, having been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League by Bayern Munich and dropping crucial points domestically following a series of inconsistent performances. With the team approaching the end of a second successive season without silverware, scrutiny has intensified both on and off the pitch.

According to journalist Miguel Serrano, speaking on the “Radiostadio Noce” programme on Onda Cero, tensions within the squad escalated into a physical confrontation between the two players.

The incident is said to have taken place around two weeks ago at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training complex. Reports suggest what began as a verbal disagreement developed into a more serious altercation, with the German defender allegedly slapping the Spanish full-back.

The reported clash occurred in the period between matches against Deportivo Alaves and Real Betis. Notably, the fixture against Alaves marked the last time Carreras featured in the starting line-up, with his involvement in the team diminishing significantly since then.

Underlying tensions within the squad

While it has been indicated that the situation did not escalate further beyond the initial incident, the report suggests that the disagreement reflects broader issues within the dressing room rather than an isolated dispute.

Sources point to differing footballing perspectives between players, alongside a generational divide within the squad. The contrast in experience between established senior figures and younger players is said to have contributed to communication challenges, complicating relationships on and off the pitch.

This backdrop of internal strain comes at a time when results have already placed the squad under considerable pressure. Consecutive setbacks in domestic competition have compounded the disappointment of European elimination, fuelling concerns about cohesion within the team.

A club under pressure

Real Madrid’s situation illustrates the extent to which on-field struggles can influence dressing room dynamics. With expectations consistently high, particularly at a club of its stature, prolonged periods without success often magnify internal frictions.

Although the reported altercation appears to have been contained, its implications may extend beyond the individuals involved. The apparent reduction in Carreras’ role following the incident is likely to prompt further questions about squad management and unity as the season approaches its conclusion.

Questions over unity as season nears end

As Real Madrid attempt to stabilise their campaign, attention will remain fixed not only on performances but also on the atmosphere within the squad.

The reported clash serves as a reminder that maintaining cohesion is critical during challenging periods. Whether the team can address these underlying tensions may prove decisive in determining how they finish the season and rebuild for the future.

During pre-match meetings, the technical staff highlighted the qualities of Enppi, pointing to their youthful squad and energetic style of play.

They also warned that Enppi players often raise their level in high-profile matches, viewing such fixtures as an opportunity to showcase their abilities.

Torup emphasised the importance of maintaining full concentration throughout the game, particularly in defence, where lapses could prove costly.

He urged his players to avoid mistakes and remain disciplined against an opponent capable of capitalising on errors.

The coach also noted Enppi’s recent record against top sides, including a victory over Zamalek SC earlier in the season and a draw in the reverse fixture, underlining the threat they pose.

The award recognises the standout African or African-origin player in the Belgian Pro League, with the defender’s performances for KRC Genk earning him the honour.

El Ouahdi, 24, was widely regarded as a leading contender following a consistent campaign in which he contributed at both ends of the pitch.

He finished ahead of Adem Zorgane and Raphael Onyedika, who were also recognised for strong seasons.

The Moroccan international’s attacking output proved decisive, with his ability to influence games from a defensive position setting him apart from his rivals.

His success places him among a select group of Moroccan players to have won the award, joining Mbark Boussoufa and Tarik Tissoudali.

Boussoufa claimed the prize on three occasions, while Tissoudali’s win in 2022 highlighted Morocco’s continued presence at the top level of European football.

El Ouahdi’s victory also continues a strong run for Genk, who have now produced back-to-back winners after Tolu Arokodare secured the award last season.

The recognition reflects the club’s reputation for developing African talent and providing a platform for players to excel.

Statistically, El Ouahdi’s campaign underlined his impact.

Despite playing as a defender, he recorded 12 goals and four assists in 41 appearances, a return that highlights his attacking contribution as well as his defensive reliability.

His ability to drive forward and influence play has made him one of the most complete performers in the league this season.

With such form, interest from clubs across Europe is expected to grow ahead of the summer transfer window.

Even if Genk qualify for continental competition, retaining the full-back could prove difficult as his profile continues to rise.

For now, the award marks a significant milestone in El Ouahdi’s career, reinforcing both his individual progress and Morocco’s growing influence in European football.

The post El Ouahdi wins Ebony Shoe as best African player in Belgium first appeared on African Football.

Hull, in particular, are pushing for promotion and are understood to view the winger as a player capable of adding pace and unpredictability in the final third.

Benhattab spent the second half of the season on loan at Stade de Reims, where he showed glimpses of his ability despite limited statistical output.

He scored one goal and provided no assists in 22 appearances across all competitions, although those figures are not seen as a full reflection of his overall impact on the pitch.

Their situation is complicated by their involvement in the Ligue 2 play-offs, with promotion to the top flight likely to influence their financial capacity to complete a deal.

As the transfer window approaches, his future remains uncertain, with several clubs positioning themselves for a possible move.

The Senegal captain remains sidelined for the rescheduled Matchday 28 encounter, extending his absence at a decisive stage of the season.

Al-Hilal head into the fixture with the opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Al-Nassr, who currently hold a five-point advantage at the top of the table.

A victory would reduce that deficit to just two points, significantly tightening the race for the title.

However, Koulibaly’s continued absence presents a major challenge for the side.

The experienced centre-back has not featured since 8 April, and there is still no confirmed timeline for his return, with his rehabilitation programme ongoing.

His absence is not only a tactical setback but also a loss of leadership within the squad.

As captain of the Senegal national football team, Koulibaly brings experience and authority, qualities that are particularly important during high-pressure moments in a title run-in.

Al-Hilal must therefore navigate a critical period without one of their most influential players, relying on alternative defensive options to maintain their push for the championship.

The club’s medical staff have opted to prioritise a full recovery, highlighting the seriousness of the injury and the need to avoid any risk of aggravation.

With the season entering its final stages, every match carries added importance, and the absence of key players can have a significant impact on the outcome of the title race.

For Koulibaly, the focus remains on regaining full fitness as quickly as possible.

His progress will continue to be monitored closely, both by the club and supporters, as hopes remain that he could return before the end of the campaign.

In the meantime, Al-Hilal face the challenge of maintaining momentum without their defensive leader, as they look to keep pressure on Al-Nassr in the race for the Saudi Pro League title.

The post Koulibaly to miss key Al-Hilal clash amid injury recovery first appeared on African Football.

The proposed changes would have increased the number of participating clubs, particularly from Africa’s top-ranked football nations, including South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Nigeria.

Discussions around the reform had focused on widening access to the competition, with the aim of increasing competitiveness and boosting its commercial appeal.

Under the proposal, leading associations could have been allocated three or even four slots in the tournament, allowing more clubs to compete at the highest level of African club football.

For South Africa, the changes would have opened the door for the third-placed team in the Betway Premiership to qualify for the Champions League.

However, despite reported support for the idea within CAF, the governing body has opted to delay implementation.

The primary concern is the pressure on the football calendar, with domestic leagues and continental competitions already tightly scheduled.

There are also complications linked to the overlap with the start of new domestic seasons and the qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

These factors have made it difficult to introduce additional fixtures without risking player fatigue and logistical challenges.

As a result, CAF has chosen to hold off on making immediate changes, leaving the current competition format unchanged for now.

Clubs across the continent, particularly those in top-performing leagues, will have to wait for further clarity on whether the expansion will eventually be introduced.

The delay highlights the balancing act facing African football authorities as they attempt to grow the game while managing an increasingly crowded schedule.

For now, attention will remain on the existing format of the Champions League, even as discussions about its future continue behind the scenes.

The post CAF delays Champions League expansion over scheduling concerns first appeared on African Football.

Wydad Athletic Club have announced that their board of directors will step down, following a sustained run of poor results and increasing pressure from supporters.

The decision comes after a difficult period for the Moroccan side, who have failed to win any of their last six matches. A 1-0 defeat to Renaissance Zemamra proved to be the tipping point in a run that has seen confidence around the club decline sharply.

In a statement, the board confirmed that it would resign at the upcoming ordinary elective general meeting, citing responsibility and the need to ensure continuity.

“The board of directors of Wydad Club announces its resignation during the upcoming ordinary elective general meeting, in respect for responsibility and current obligations,” the statement read.

Plans have been outlined for a structured transition, with registration for the next season set to run from 5 May to 5 June, followed by a candidacy period for the presidency between 5 June and 20 June. The process is intended to facilitate what the club described as a “smooth democratic transition”.

The leadership change comes against a backdrop of instability on the pitch and in the dugout.

Earlier, Wydad parted company with former head coach Patrice Carteron after a short and unsuccessful spell in charge. He has since been replaced by Mohamed Benchrifa, who has been tasked with improving results.

However, performances have yet to recover. During Carteron’s tenure, the team failed to secure a victory in five matches, recording two draws and three defeats. Among those results were a 2-1 loss to bottom-placed Union Yaacoub El Mansour and the recent defeat to Zemamra.

The poor run has had a direct impact on Wydad’s position in the Botola Pro standings.

Sierra Leonean striker Kei Kamara has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 41, drawing the curtain on a career spanning nearly two decades and marked by longevity and consistent goal-scoring.

Kamara, widely regarded as one of Sierra Leone’s most influential footballers, earned 45 caps for his national team and scored eight goals. His international tally places him among the country’s leading scorers, level with fellow football icon Mohamed Kallon.

While his contributions on the international stage were significant, it was in Major League Soccer (MLS) that Kamara established his enduring reputation. He finishes his career with 147 regular season goals, making him the second-highest scorer in the league’s history.

Over the course of his time in North America, Kamara played for a record 12 different MLS franchises, underlining both his longevity and adaptability. Among his most notable spells were two periods at Columbus Crew, as well as time spent with Sporting Kansas City, Chicago Fire FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Nicknamed “Special K”, Kamara became known for his physical presence, aerial ability and consistent performances in front of goal. His career in MLS coincided with the league’s growth, and he is widely seen as one of the players who helped shape its modern identity.

Beyond statistics, Kamara was recognised as a leader both on and off the pitch. His journey from Sierra Leone to becoming one of MLS’s most prolific forwards has often been cited as an example of perseverance and determination. He also played a role in strengthening the connection between African football and the North American league, opening doors for other players from the continent.

His retirement marks the end of a significant chapter for both Sierra Leonean football and MLS. For Sierra Leone, Kamara represented a generation of players who brought international recognition to the country’s game. In MLS, his departure removes one of the league’s most recognisable and enduring figures.

Despite stepping away from professional football, Kamara’s impact is expected to continue. His achievements, particularly his place among the top scorers in MLS history, ensure his legacy will remain prominent.

As one of the few players to maintain such a high level of performance into his forties, Kamara’s career stands as a testament to durability and professionalism in modern football. His influence, both in Africa and North America, is likely to be felt for years to come.

Kamara leaves behind a record defined not only by goals, but also by his role in inspiring future generations of footballers across continents.

The post Sierra Leone striker Kamara retires in MLS after two decades first appeared on African Football.

Sevilla head coach García Plaza has defended his recent team selections after leaving striker Akor Adams on the bench for a second consecutive match, as the club secured a narrow but significant 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in La Liga.

The result, sealed by a decisive goal from Alexis Sánchez, provides a crucial boost to Sevilla FC’s efforts to move away from the relegation zone in what has been a challenging season. With every point now critical, the win represents more than a routine success, underlining a shift in priorities at the club as they battle to maintain their top-flight status.

Despite Adams’ notable contributions this season, including eight goals and three assists, he remained an unused substitute throughout the match. The decision has prompted discussion, given his role as one of Sevilla’s more consistent attacking performers, highlighted by a penalty scored against Atlético Madrid earlier in the campaign.

However, speaking after the match, García Plaza dismissed suggestions that past performances guarantee a place in the starting line-up.
“I bet on Neal, and he scored a goal the other day, that’s all there is to it,” he said.

The manager emphasised that his current approach is based firmly on immediate impact rather than reputation or previous achievements.
“Akor, with me, has played every game; he scored a penalty against Atlético, but right now, it’s not the number of minutes each player gets that’s important, but the quality of the minutes they give us,” García Plaza explained.

Instead of Adams, the coach opted to start Chidera Ejuke, whose style of play offered a different tactical dimension. Known for his direct running and ability to take on defenders, Ejuke provided the unpredictability Sevilla sought in a tightly contested encounter.

“We’re looking for the kind of situations he creates; he’s very confident, good in one-on-one situations, good at drawing defenders out,” García Plaza said.

The decision appeared to pay off, as Sevilla managed to find the balance required to secure all three points in a high-pressure fixture. The emphasis on adaptability reflects the broader context of Sevilla’s season, with the club spending much of the campaign in an unfamiliar position near the lower half of the table.

Once regular contenders in European competition, Sevilla are now focused on securing stability. García Plaza’s selections suggest a pragmatic approach, prioritising players who can influence key moments over those with established status in the squad.

For Adams, the situation presents a new challenge. While his earlier form made him a regular starter, increased competition and tactical adjustments mean his role may now evolve.

García Plaza indicated that the striker could still play an important part, albeit in a different capacity.
“If not, we’ll have Akor for the second half,” he said.

With a decisive stretch of fixtures ahead, Sevilla’s fight for survival continues, and the manager’s willingness to make bold decisions could prove pivotal in determining their fate.

The post Adams faces fresh challenge as Sevilla reshuffle attack first appeared on African Football.

The race for promotion to the Premier League reaches a crucial stage this week as Ajayi’s Hull City prepare to face Azeez’s Millwall in the opening leg of the Championship playoff semi-finals, setting up a high-stakes encounter between two players with Nigerian connections.

Defender Semi Ajayi is expected to feature for Hull City, while Femi Azeez will be among the key figures for Millwall when the sides meet on Friday. The return leg is scheduled to take place on Monday, with a place in the playoff final at stake.

The fixture brings together two teams that finished the regular Championship season in contrasting positions. Millwall secured third place, putting them among the frontrunners for promotion, while Hull City claimed the sixth and final playoff spot.

Much of the attention surrounding the tie is focused on Azeez, who has emerged as one of the standout performers in the Championship this season. The 24-year-old winger has impressed with his attacking contributions, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists during the regular campaign. His performances have not gone unnoticed, attracting the interest of Nigeria’s national team coach Eric Chelle, who is reportedly keen to bring him into the Super Eagles setup.

Ajayi, meanwhile, brings defensive solidity and experience to Hull City’s backline, setting up an intriguing personal duel between two players who could both feature on the international stage for Nigeria.

The playoff semi-finals are widely regarded as one of the most intense phases of the English football calendar, with promotion to the Premier League offering significant financial and sporting rewards. For both Hull City and Millwall, the two-legged tie represents a decisive test of their ambitions.

In the second semi-final, Southampton will take on Middlesbrough, completing the lineup of teams vying for a place in the final.

As the first leg approaches, attention will be firmly on how Hull City handle Millwall’s attacking threat, particularly the influence of Azeez, whose form has been instrumental in his team’s strong league finish. At the same time, Ajayi’s defensive responsibilities will be crucial in keeping Hull City competitive over the two matches.

With promotion hopes hanging in the balance, both teams are expected to approach the encounter with intensity, knowing that even small margins could prove decisive across the two legs. The outcome will determine which side moves one step closer to securing a coveted place in the Premier League.

The post Azeez and Ajayi face off in Championship playoff first appeared on African Football.

Nottingham Forest strengthened their bid to avoid relegation with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea, as Taiwo Awoniyi scored twice on his 100th appearance for the club.

The Nigeria international, making only his second start of the season, delivered a decisive performance that lifted Forest to 16th in the table on 42 points. With three matches remaining, they now sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Awoniyi made an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge, opening the scoring after just two minutes. He headed home from a cross by Dilane Bakwa to give the visitors an early advantage. The forward then played a key role in Forest’s second goal, winning a penalty that Igor Jesus converted in the 15th minute.

Forest extended their lead early in the second half when Awoniyi added his second goal of the match. The striker tapped into an empty net in the 52nd minute following a low cross from substitute Morgan Gibbs-White, putting the visitors firmly in control at 3-0.

Chelsea managed a late consolation through João Pedro, whose overhead kick in stoppage time ended the home side’s run of more than 550 minutes without a league goal. The drought had stretched back to early March.

Awoniyi’s brace took his tally for the season to four goals in 14 appearances. Notably, his only previous start this campaign had also come against Chelsea, and the last time he scored twice in the Premier League was against the same opponents on 13 May 2025, when his goals helped lift Forest out of the relegation zone.

Forest manager Vitor Pereira praised Awoniyi’s contribution after the match, highlighting the striker’s importance to the team.

“[He brings] everything – Taiwo Awoniyi is a danger player. He is not on the list in the Europa League, but we know he will push the defensive line of the opponents because he runs, attacks the space, holds the ball and this is the kind of spirit and the smile and energy we need in this team,” Pereira said.

The Portuguese coach also commended his side’s overall performance and determination as they continue their fight for survival.

“We are a team that wants to keep our future in our hands and to do that we need to win games and not to be worried with the results of the other teams,” he said.

“If we win, we keep the distance and today another game, they proved again the speed, the quality and organisation. I am very happy for them and the players and the supporters.”

Pereira pointed to his team’s pressing and organisation as key factors in their success.

“One thing we are doing well is our pressure. We are organised. When we play these teams that put a lot of players in the middle, it is important to close the space inside. We have players that can score goals in different ways, not a clean sheet but a fantastic goal from Joao Pedro.

“But I’m very happy because we showed strong spirit again and showed this is a special group. It’s difficult to deal with four managers, different methodologies and different demands, tactical demands.

“It’s difficult to keep them united and keep them with friendship, and they are one of the best groups I have worked with in my career.”

The result leaves Forest in a stronger position as the season nears its conclusion, with Awoniyi’s performance offering timely momentum in their battle to remain in the Premier League.

The post Pereira hails “danger player” Awoniyi after Chelsea win first appeared on African Football.

Ademola Lookman has been included in Atlético Madrid’s squad for their UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Arsenal, signalling a potential boost for the Spanish side despite recent injury concerns.

The Nigerian international is set to return to his hometown of London for the decisive encounter, which follows a closely contested first leg that ended in a 1-1 draw. Lookman played the full match in that earlier fixture, underlining his importance to the team at a crucial stage of the competition.

There had been doubts about the forward’s availability after he reported discomfort in his abductor during Atletico’s recent Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad. The issue raised concerns among supporters and coaching staff about his fitness ahead of the high-stakes European clash.

However, his inclusion in the matchday squad suggests that the injury may not be severe enough to rule him out. Atletico appear to have managed his condition carefully in recent days, opting to rest him during their domestic fixture at the weekend.

Lookman was among several first-team players who did not feature in Atletico’s 2-0 victory over Valencia CF in La Liga. The decision to rotate the squad is likely to have been influenced by the importance of the upcoming Champions League tie, as the club aims to secure a place in the final.

The semi-final remains finely balanced after the first leg, with both sides still in contention. Arsenal, playing at home in the return fixture, will be hoping to capitalise on familiar surroundings, while Atletico will look to draw on their experience in European competition.

Lookman’s potential involvement could be a key factor. The forward has been an influential figure for Atletico and offers attacking options that could prove decisive in such a tightly poised contest.

While Atletico have not disclosed full details regarding the player’s fitness, his presence in the travelling squad will be seen as an encouraging sign. The final decision on whether he starts or features from the bench may depend on last-minute assessments ahead of kick-off.

With a place in the Champions League final at stake, both teams are expected to field their strongest possible line-ups. Lookman’s return to London adds an additional narrative to the match, as he prepares to play in front of a home crowd in one of the most significant games of his club career.

The outcome of the tie will determine who advances to Europe’s premier club competition final, with little separating the two sides after the first leg.

The post Lookman Ready for Arsenal Test After Injury Scare first appeared on African Football.

RB Leipzig head of sport Marcel Schäfer has likened Bayern Munich’s long-standing dominance in German football to that of Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa, saying the Bundesliga champions’ financial strength makes them exceptionally difficult to overtake.

In a candid assessment, Schäfer suggested that Bayern’s grip on the league has rarely been broken by direct competition alone. Instead, he argued that the few occasions on which Bayern have lost the title have largely coincided with periods of underperformance from the Munich club itself.

Reflecting on past campaigns, Schäfer said: “I played for Wolfsburg in 2009 and it was totally unexpected that we won the league. Bayern struggled. In 2011/12, Dortmund did a great job, but Bayern struggled. 2007, Stuttgart won – Bayern struggled. The only team, we have to be honest, who had an outstanding season – without Bayern struggling – was Leverkusen, but this is once in 30 years.”

His comparison to Mamelodi Sundowns underlined what he described as a structural imbalance. The South African side are currently pursuing a ninth successive league title, backed by financial resources that allow them to retain key players and outspend domestic rivals.

“You’re competing with a club that has a huge distance over others and, through history, one of the best clubs in the world = definitely the best club in Germany, sporting wise, and of course economic wise,” Schäfer explained.

“Like Mamelodi Sundowns – they are able to spend and it’s easy for them to keep the best players. It’s not a must to sell any players – because they have so many other revenues. Bayern is a big brand and world class players.”

Schäfer’s remarks come as Leipzig attempt to rebuild following a turbulent period. The club underwent sweeping changes after what he described as a disappointing season, including a large turnover of players and staff.

“After the big change last year with a very disappointing season, we did a complete reset. We sold our best players, 28 transfers in total. New coaching staff, new staff members – so it was a big change. A full reset and then go back step-by-step to where we belong to,” he said.

Despite the scale of the overhaul, Schäfer acknowledged that an immediate title challenge would be unrealistic. “To say next year we want to compete with Bayern for the league, I think it would not be realistic – but you still need to have dreams in your mind, and we will work for it. That is why we are here. But the first step is to compete with other teams for Champions League places.”

However, ambitions remain high within the club, particularly in knockout competitions. “If you ask me, do I want to win the German Cup? Yes – and that’s why we are here,” he added.

Leipzig’s path back to the top of German football may be gradual, but Schäfer indicated that the club intends to be ready to capitalise on any slip-ups from Bayern, as they continue to rebuild towards a future title challenge.

The post Leipzig chief compares Bayern dominance to Sundowns first appeared on African Football.
